On the morning of 8 October 2025, in Hanoi, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Thượng Cát Bridge and its approach roads was officially held by the Hanoi People’s Committee, marking an important milestone in the city’s transport infrastructure development. TEDI (Transport Engineering Design Inc. – JSC) is honored to serve as the design consultant for this key project.
The Thuong Cat Bridge spans the Red River, connecting the Tu Liem area (now Thuong Cat Ward) and the Đông Anh area (now Thiên Lộc Commune) of Hanoi. The project commenced in conjunction with the 71st anniversary of Hanoi’s Liberation Day (10 October 1954 – 10 October 2025). The total length of the bridge and its approaches is 5.226 km, including a 780 m main span, 3.125 km of viaducts, and 1.321 km of access roads. The total investment is over VND 7,303 billion, funded by the Hanoi municipal budget.
The bridge is designed with 8 lanes (6 vehicular lanes and 2 auxiliary lanes), with the main span width of 35 m and viaducts 31 m. The southern approach has a typical cross-section of 60 m (6 vehicular lanes, 2 auxiliary lanes on the main route, and 2 parallel roads), while the northern approach is 50 m wide (4 vehicular lanes and 2 parallel roads).
TEDI proposed a single-plane cable-stayed bridge as the primary structural solution, harmonizing technical, aesthetic, and symbolic urban elements. The design is inspired by the image of a bird’s wings in the proverb “Đất lành chim đậu” (“A good land attracts birds”), reflecting harmony with the Red River’s rich ecosystem while serving as a globally recognizable landmark.
As the overall design consultant, TEDI applied advanced technologies, including BIM (Building Information Modeling) and digital structural simulation, to optimize technical solutions, ensure construction safety, and maximize investment efficiency. Environmental, hydraulic, and architectural landscape solutions were carefully studied to create a project that is modern, green, and harmonious with the Red River scenery.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, TEDI representatives stated:
“We are proud to accompany Hanoi in building landmark infrastructure projects, contributing to the vision of a civilized, modern, and sustainable capital. Thượng Cát Bridge is not only a transport link but also a bridge of trust and a symbol of aspirations connecting the future.”
Upon completion, Thượng Cát Bridge is expected to become an architectural highlight of the Red River, alleviate traffic congestion, expand urban development space, and drive socio-economic growth for the northern Red River region.
