On the morning of October 15th, 2019, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended the inauguration ceremony and cut the ribbon to to mark the opening of Hoang Van Thu bridge in Hai Phong, which was dubbed “the city of bridges”.

Hoang Van Thu bridge is an important item of the investment project to build technical infrastructure of the new urban area in the north of Cam river, with a length of about 1,138.5m. The bridge has an impressive design with the shape of “wings of a seabird “, creating traffic connection and expanding Hai Phong to the North. It is a special-grade transport project which was built across Cam River, passing through the communes of Tan Duong, Duong Quan, Hoa Dong (Thuy Nguyen district), Minh Khai ward (Hong Bang district) and May To ward (Ngo Quyen district) and commenced in 2017. The total investment amount of Hoang Van Thu bridge is 2,173 billion VND.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc affirmed that this is a modern bridge, one of the key construction works of Hai Phong in accordance with Resolution 32 and Resolution 45 of the Politburo. “The special thing about this bridge is that it was fully designed and constructed by Vietnam. This is a huge footprint”, emphasized the Prime Minister.
At this event, Chairman of Hai Phong City People’s Committee Nguyen Van Tung expressed his pleasure: “The event of opening Hoang Van Thu bridge to traffic has an important meaning in the implementation of the Project on Infrastructure Construction Investment for new urban area in the north of Cam River, which contributes to the gradual improvement of the new city center system as per the orientation of developing urban space and the adjustment of the General Plan of construction of Hai Phong City to 2025, with a vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1448/QD-TTg dated September 16th, 2009.
Hoang Van Thu bridge with the total investment amount of more than 2000 billion VND
Hoang Van Thu Bridge includes the main bridge which was designed according to the standards of urban trunk roads, with a design speed of 80km/h. The southern branches of the bridge (in the inner city) has a design speed of 40 km/h. The northern branches of the bridge (in Thuy Nguyen district) has a design speed of 50 km/h. The bypass roads in the north intersect the dyke located in north of Cam river (3rd and 4th bypass) with a design speed of 30 km/h. The parallel road on both sides of the bridge on the north bank has a design speed of 50 km/h.
The main bridge Hoang Van Thu is an arch bridge running between concrete filled steel tubes, the main span of 200m which is the largest span in Vietnam to date. The bridge has a complex structure with the application of advanced and modern design technology for the first time.
The main bridge with a length of 290m ensuring a navigational clearance of 125x25m, is in the form of arch bridge structure running between the suspension bar, arched concrete filled steel tubes. The steel structure of the main bridge weighs more than 5,000 tons (the long arch weighing 527 tons). The width of the bridge cross-section is 33.5 m, ensuring 4 lanes for motor vehicles, 2 mixed lanes and sidewalks. The structure of the southern branches of the bridge consists of two symmetrical branch bridges. For the convenience of pedestrians, apart from the stairs, the bridge is designed to have 2 elevators installed at the two sides of bridge section in the inner city.
Arch bridge with remarkable design
The project on technical infrastructure construction and investment of the new urban area in the north of Cam river includes the construction of Hoang Van Thu bridge, construction of dyke system to the left of Cam river, construction of embankment system of Cam river and construction of main traffic system and a technical infrastructure system to serve the entire northern region of Cam river with the total area of 1,445.51 ha.
