On November 17, at the Maritime University (Hai Phong city), the Conference on Investment in Inland Waterway Infrastructure (IWT) in the North was organized by the Vietnam Inland Waterway Administration.
Speaking at the conference, Director of the Vietnam Inland Waterway Administration Bui Thien Thu emphasized the potential and advantages of water transport.
In particular, with the responsibility of about 20% of the total transport volume of the country’s modes of transport, 45% in the river delta and 47.5% in the Southeast region, especially in the Mekong Delta region. accounting for nearly 80%, so water transport plays an important role in the circulation of goods.

Previously, a representative of the Transport Engineering Design Inc (TEDI) – the master of planning said that the waterway industry currently has advantages in terms of policies when planning the inland waterway infrastructure in the period 2021-2030, vision to 2050 has been approved by the Prime Minister. This was followed by Decision No. 1269/QD-TTg dated October 19, 2022 of the Prime Minister promulgating plans, policies and solutions to implement the Master Plan and Decision No. 21/2022/QD-TTg approving the policies to encourage the development of inland waterway transport.
Accordingly, there are 6 projects using state budget in the 2021-2030 period, including: Upgrading the Duong river waterway (Duong railway bridge); WB6 project – additional capital phase (Day – Ninh Co canal); Project on Upgrading Quang Ninh – Hai Phong – Thai Binh – Nam Dinh – Ninh Binh route across Luoc River (Waterway Corridor No. 2); Upgrading the Viet Tri – Yen Bai VTT route (Red River); Upgrading the Van Gia – Ka Long waterway transport route; Elevating the clearance of road and railway bridges crossing the national inland waterway – phase 1 (Northern area).
In addition to developing IWT, it is necessary to strengthen connections with gateway seaports, important seaports of key economic regions and Inland Container Depot (ICDs), promote the development of container transport routes, river-sea shipping routes. (VR-SB), developing a fleet of specialized ships (containers, bows, lifting cabins, soft-joint barges, etc.), bringing large tonnage ships into inland ports..
