On March 9, 2024, the People’s Committee of Ngoc Chien Commune, Muong La District, in coordination with Giao Thong Newspaper, organized the inauguration of the Cham Pong Village Drainage Construction Investment Project, Ngoc Chien Commune, Muong La District, Son La Province. This is a project implemented by the Traffic Safety Program of Giao Thong Newspaper and sponsors. TEDI, as a Consulting Unit, supported the survey, design, and supervision of this drainage project (spillway).
Previously, from Nam Nghiep village to Ngoc Chien commune center through Cham Pong village, it took 12km of mountain forest road and had to cross a road with a temporary bridge over the stream. Every time there was a flood, it would take about 1-2 weeks for people to be unable to move across the stream. The road was isolated, the temporary bridge was built from tree trunks and was often flooded and swept away every time there was a flood. From Nam Nghiep village to the commune center is 12km, the road with this bridge is the only way.
Since the beginning of 2022, the temporary bridge across this location has been washed away 5 times, and every time there is a flood, people cannot travel for about 2 weeks. Especially for students, going to school is very difficult. The bridge is temporarily built from 2 wooden trunks spanning both banks with steel wires wrapped around it. The 2 bridge abutments are arranged with precarious stones, the bridge surface with large holes is the distance between the horizontal wooden bars. On sunny days, without rain, the bridge is a walkway for nearly 1,100 people from the 2 villages of Nam Nghiep and Cham Pong here.
Because the terrain here is mountainous, the villages are on high ground, the road is deeply sunken, and there is a stream crossing, so when it rains and floods, the water here is immense and swirling. The blockage that cannot move due to high water and frequent accidents during the flood season have become an obsession for the people here…
Therefore, the construction of a solid structure here is the wish of the people in the village and the commune government. With the support of Giao Thong Newspaper and sponsors, the Cham Pong Village Drainage Construction Investment Project, Ngoc Chien Commune has been implemented since 2023 and has been completed. The completed project put into use has made it convenient for people in the village to travel to the commune center, the road to school for students seems closer, safer and more secure. The solidification of the works across the stream here also partly contributes to the economic, cultural and social development of the people.
