On 19 April 2024, at the Rach Mieu 2 construction site, the Ministry of Construction, in coordination with the People’s Committees of Tien Giang and Ben Tre provinces, held a ceremony to close the main span over the river, marking a significant milestone in the project schedule. The Rach Mieu 2 Bridge project is managed by the My Thuan Project Management Board, with TEDI (Transport Engineering Design Inc. – JSC) responsible for surveying, project planning, and detailed design.
The bridge has a total length of over 17.5 km, including a 2.76 km main span across the Tien River. Designed to meet Class I road standards (TCVN 4054-2005) with a design speed of 80 km/h, the route comprises 4 vehicular lanes and 2 auxiliary lanes, effectively alleviating traffic on the existing Rach Mieu Bridge.
The main river crossing is a two-pylon cable-stayed bridge with a 270 m main span, providing Class I navigation clearance with a vertical clearance of 7.0 m and a navigation width of 80 m. The deck structure combines cable-stayed supports with a steel box girder and reinforced concrete deck slab, optimized for the local hydrogeological conditions.
Approach viaducts utilize precast prestressed Super-T girders with spans of 33–40 m, ensuring economical and rapid construction. The bridge is equipped with lighting, drainage, and expansion joints to ensure operational safety and integration.
TEDI – Pioneering BIM Application in Large-Scale Bridge Design
A highlight of the Rach Mieu design is TEDI’s application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) throughout the technical design process. BIM enables:
- Visual simulation of the entire project from design to construction;
- Effective interdisciplinary coordination among structural, architectural, drainage, and traffic systems;
- Early clash detection to minimize construction conflicts;
- Accurate management of schedule, cost, and quality;
- Promotion of digital transformation in Vietnam’s transport infrastructure sector.
TEDI developed a high-detail 3D BIM model for Rach Mieu 2, integrating structural components, construction schedule, and future maintenance data, laying the foundation for lifecycle data transfer.
The successful closure of the main span demonstrates TEDI’s design expertise and commitment to modernizing bridge consultancy, contributing to timely project completion and delivering tangible benefits to local communities. Upon completion, Rach Mieu 2 Bridge will reduce congestion on the existing bridge, enhance regional connectivity, and drive sustainable socio-economic development in Tiền Giang, Bến Tre, and the Mekong Delta region.
